General Reg Urschler

Reg was born in Pittsburgh, PA, 23 April 1935, the son of Austrian immigrant parents. After graduation from North Catholic High School in Troyhill in 1953 he enlisted in the Air Force, entering pilot training at Vance AFB at age 19, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation. He was assigned to the 343d Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron, 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Forbes AFB, as Aircraft Commander in RB-47E’s, H’s and K’s and the EB and ERB-47s. While assigned to this unit, his flying duties included tours of duty in Japan, Turkey, Greenland, England and Alaska, with reconnaissance missions over the Soviet Union, China and North Korea during the Cold War. He transitioned to KC-135s at Castle AFB in 1964 and flew reconnaissance missions out of Eielson AFB and Shemya Air Force Station in various RC-135 models. From there he rose through the command ranks at Kadena Air Base, and Offut, Rickenbacker, Fairchild, and Kelly Air Force Bases, earning his BA degree in business economics from Park College, Parkville, Missouri, in 1973. 

After retirement as a Brigadier General in 1985, Reg logged over 3,000 hours flying his private P-51D, Gunfighter, in air shows all over the United States. He stopped flying in 2015 at age 80.
